    Exterior Clean & Seal Importance

Cleaning and sealing natural stone around pools is one of the most important maintenance steps for both appearance and long-term durability. Stones like Travertine, Lueders Limestone, limestone, flagstone, and sandstone are all porous to varying degrees, which means they absorb water, chemicals, oils, and organic material unless protected. Here’s why it matters: 1. Prevents Water Intrusion & Structural Damage Pool decks are constantly exposed to: Chlorinated or salt water Rain Freeze/thaw cycles (when applicable) Sprinklers and irrigation Natural stone absorbs moisture. Over time that can lead to: Cracking Spalling/flaking Surface erosion Loose coping or deck movement Efflorescence (white mineral deposits) A penetrating sealer helps reduce water absorption while still allowing the stone to breathe. 2. Protects Against Pool Chemicals & Salt Saltwater pools are especially hard on stone. Salt can: Break down softer limestones Cause pitting and scaling Leave white crusty deposits Accelerate deterioration Chlorine and acidic cleaners can also etch certain stones, especially limestone and travertine. Proper sealing creates a barrier that slows chemical penetration and minimizes damage. 3. Prevents Mold, Mildew & Algae Growth Pool environments stay damp and shaded in areas. Unsealed stone can trap: Moisture Organic debris Suntan oils Dirt That creates ideal conditions for: Algae Mildew Black spotting Slippery surfaces Routine cleaning plus sealing helps keep the deck safer and easier to maintain. 4. Reduces Staining Natural stone stains very easily from: Leaves Rust from furniture BBQ grease Fertilizer overspray Drinks and food Hard water Travertine and lighter limestones are especially vulnerable. A quality impregnating sealer buys you time to clean spills before they permanently stain the stone. 5. Maintains Appearance & Color Without maintenance, stone often becomes: Dull Chalky Uneven in color Weathered prematurely Sealers can either: Preserve the natural matte look, or Enhance color with a richer “wet look” This is especially important for high-end pool installations where the stone is a major visual feature. 6. Extends Lifespan & Reduces Replacement Costs Replacing pool decking stone is expensive because it usually involves: Demolition Resetting stone Coping work Drainage corrections Matching discontinued materials Routine maintenance is dramatically cheaper than restoration or replacement. For many pool decks: Cleaning should happen several times per year Sealing is commonly needed every 1–3 years depending on: Stone type Sun exposure Pool chemistry Foot traffic Type of sealer used Stone-Specific Notes Travertine Very popular because it stays cooler underfoot Naturally porous Benefits heavily from sealing Saltwater pools can degrade it quickly if neglected Lueders Limestone Common in Texas pool construction Dense compared to some limestones, but still absorbent Can darken or stain from organic material Sensitive to acidic cleaners
